Greensboro was home to many notable figures during the American civil war. Two of these included Benjamin Franklin, who established the first China factory in Greensboro and fought in the Great Depression as a textile manufacturing worker. Also, according to the Greensboro Historical Society, there was Wiggy Wilson, a famous former president of the United States. He once said of the great depression, "Greensboro was the capital of the south." While it was during this period that the "colony" movement began in Greensboro, it would actually be a century later that the cotton gin industry made its move into the city proper.

Today the first signs of the civil war can be found throughout the historic downtown area. Two buildings containing marble edifices were constructed during the first few years of the war to honor General Gordon, the first American governor of the new nation. A plaque sits on top of the first building in honor of this man. A second plaque is located on top of the second marble edifice recognizing Samuel T. Corum, the first African American appointed as United States Secretary of War under President Abraham Lincoln.

While it can certainly be said that the first place to visit in Greensboro when visiting the North Carolina state capitol is the capitol building itself, it is interesting to note that it is situated in an area of the city where there has been very little development. This especially rings true in regard to the downtown area, although Greensboro's core includes some of the most modern and high tech skyscrapers in the world today. Much of Greensboro's early development occurred around the time of the world war ii, which is to be found in the area of the old central park known as central park. Although the park is not as large as the one located in Charlotte, it still provides a beautiful setting for a picnic or family outing. The close proximity to the central area means that even people who live in the far reaches of North Carolina can easily make it to Greensboro.

Two other historic landmarks in Greensboro are the county courthouse and the old textile mill located near the intersection of Hillsborough street and Hillsboro Boulevard. The courthouse serves as a vital part of American history and is just a stone's throw from downtown Greensboro. In addition to the courthouse, the central business district of Greensboro waterfront consists of several important buildings and shopping centers. The major shopping area includes Hillsboro Village, Chastain Square mall, the stadiums and other buildings that surround the downtown area. The larger picture includes a wide variety of stores, services and businesses throughout the downtown area along with the major textile center of Greensboro.

While it may be true that the downtown area is growing, there is still no substitute for a good old fashion white picket fence in the downtown area of Greensboro. It is this tradition that has kept Greensboro's downtown area looking its best despite much development taking place outside of the downtown area. Although there have been a number of new hotels constructed in downtown Greensboro, many of the businesses and services that the historic downtown area of Greensboro was famous for such as the famous Piedmont Triad, The Gold Cup, The Willows, The Chastain Square, The Cobble Hill and The Montford remain. These local landmarks have remained because of the loyal customer base they maintain among the area's African Americans, their conservative political machines and their general sense of community. A number of these same customers also remain today in the downtown area of Greensboro and continue to come back every year for the vibrant nightlife that the area offers.

Greensboro, North Carolina is located on the eastern shore of the Catawbas River and is bordered on two sides by the Appalachian Mountains. In the first half of the nineteenth century, Greensboro was the county seat of Wilberforce County. It is where the Black Watchmen of Wilberforce County made their headquarters. The first municipal court house in Greensboro was designed by architect Samuel Robinson. The Courthouse and Jail are still open for business today.
